The moose (Alces alces) is the largest member of the deer family.
State Symbol[]
Its status as the state animal was adopted by the Legislature of 1979.[1] It appears on the State Flag.
It also appeared on Maine postage stamps: on a state flag stamp in 1976, as part of the Greetings from America series of 2002 and the revalued set of later that year, and beside a state flag in 2009.
