Invented as a patent medicine by Maine-born Dr. Augustin Thompson, it is a somewhat bitter carbonated soda flavored with gentian root extract. It was the first bottled carbonated beverage made in America.[1]

Its status as the state soft drink was adopted by the Legislature of 2005.[2]
